In May 2017, the European Commission, together with 14 Member States, signed the “Political Declaration on Clean Energy for the EU Islands” under the Maltese Presidency.
This Declaration was born from the recognition that islands and island regions face a particular set of energy challenges and opportunities due to their specific geographic and climatic conditions. The opportunities have the potential to make Europe’s island communities leaders in innovation in the clean energy transition for Europe.
In cooperation with the European Parliament, the Commission established a Secretariat in 2018 to meet the objectives of the EU’s Clean Energy for Islands initiative. The Secretariat acts as a best practice exchange platform for island stakeholders and provides targeted advisory and capacity building services.
Unión Renovables has supported the candidacy of the island of Arousa (Galicia) to participate in this pioneering project together with 26 other European islands.
